First, read John Gibson’s recent ridiculous column on the Fox News site.
Then, read my brief response:

Subject: The Basic Idea of Marriage
Three words that accurately describe John Gibson’s recent My Word
column, “The Basic Idea of Marriage is to Raise Kids,” are misguided,
ridiculous and shallow.
Maybe Mr. Gibson’s recent relationships have all been, basically,
about procreation, but the majority of people living in the western
world now marry, basically, for love. Limiting today’s couples to
traditional reasons for marriage as if those reasons are still the
motivations for marriages today is like saying we should forget about
the high-tech industry because the United States is, basically (at
least in an historical sense), an agricultural country.
Humans once based marriage on many things — securing an economic
position, continuing the lines of monarchy, building tribal alliances
and other reasons. Today, those with freedom in the western world
marry because they find someone to love and by whom to be loved.
I don’t remember finding anything about having children in the marriage vows.
